Product Description
A wonderful piece of folk art, following 60 years of tradition
Haitian metal sculpture was developed as an artform in the late 1950's by a blacksmith with boundless imagination and a village full of discarded oil drums. He began experimenting by making grave markers, but soon his work became recognized and he expanded to create sculptures of many kinds, including elaborate stand-alone pieces. As demand for his art increased, he taught friends and family members his craft. Today, that same little village is filled with the ringing sound of hammers against metal. Haitian metal is on the map!
A success story
The artist who created this moon sculpture is shown here in his workshop. He has been pursuing metal sculpture as his profession since he was a young boy. Through his dilligent efforts and by the practice of fair trade, Jean Claude has been able to provide for his own family, sending his children to school and enabling them to pursue careers of their own.
