Tenkara hails from mountainous regions of Japan, where the remote location of many villages required fishermen to develop a reliable method of catching fish using only the materials that were readily available in their immediate environment. Long, flexible bamboo rods, silk or horsehair line, and flies made with feathers or animal fur fastened to bent needles provided a makeshift solution as effective as it was simple.
Tenkara fishing has found its way into the hearts of anglers around the world who appreciate the minimalism of this traditional method of fishing. While tenkara shares many of the characteristics of fly fishing, as well as some of the techniques, the absence of a reel puts anglers more closely in touch with the stream and fish, requiring them to pull in the line hand over hand and manually drag when a fish runs. Because there is so little complexity to the equipment, Tenkara fly fishing allows one to focus more keenly on casting and presentation.
