Peace Sign Haitian Metal Art Wall Sculpture

"All we are saying is give peace a chance." John Lennon  called for it in a song in 1969 and we're echoing that same thought today in handmade metal art from Haiti. You don't have to be a hippie to love the beauty of this symbol adorned with doves and laurel leaves.  It's fair trade and recycled, too. How great is that?

This sculpture hangs easily with a couple of small nails

Hanging this sculpture is easy.  It doesn't have a hanger attached because it doesn't need one!  Simply hammer one small nail near the center of the piece, such as in the lower notch of the peace sign, to balance it.  Then use a second small nail underneath one of the leaves to secure it firmly to the wall.  You'll find that the nails "disappear" into the sculpture.  Be careful not to use the eyes of the birds for your nails, however.  The viewer's gaze naturally goes to their eyes and if the nail is there, the detail is lost and the "disappearing act" fails. You don't want that!

Yes, it can go outside!

Made of recycled steel, this sculpture can rust outdoors over time, but it doesn't have to.  It comes with an enamel coating that will protect it from the elements for a while, depending on exposure.  After about a year, it will need a quick touch-up. Five minutes and a little spray-on clear coat from the hardware store is all it takes to keep this sculpture looking brand new.

Recycling made beautiful

Creating metal sculptures from these cast-off oil barrels is the work of many hands.  Laborers burn out the residue from inside the barrel, and then cut it up, sand it and pound it flat.  From there, the artist takes over.  He first chalks his intended design onto the metal,  Then, using only a hammer and chisel, he begins the intricate process of cutwork and texturing, giving the piece form, shape, and dimension. Purchasing his work, you support not only the artist himself, but the laborers in his workshop, and their families.  They are able to prosper through your patronage and our fair trade practices.
