Steps:
1.First, measure the width of the door. This is the distance between the left and right sides of the finished opening. You’ll want to make sure you take the measurement at the door’s widest point, in feet and inches.
2.Next, measure the height of the door. You’ll also take this measurement at the door’s highest point, from floor to the top of the finished opening. It’s important that you take this measurement in three spots: left, center, and right sides of the door. If one side of your opening is sagging – it can cause several issues with the garage door installation.
3.Measure the width of the area next to the openings, 3-3/4” is required on each side for installation of the vertical track. Note that the inside of the garage door should be framed with wood jambs, indicated by the dotted lines in the image below.
4.After that, you’ll need to measure the distance from the top of the opening to the ceiling. This is called the headroom. You’ll measure from the header to the lowest point is at least 6 inches to ensure you have enough clearance for your torsion system and the opener together.
5.Measure the distance from the opening to the rear of the garage. This is called the backroom.
If your home has multiple garage doors, it’s important that you measure each one – even if you believe they are the same size. There may be a small difference and could cause issues with your garage door installation.
